Rock photographer Jim Marshall dies at 74
By LISA LEFF, San Francisco (AP) --

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Music photographer Jim Marshall, who spent more than a half-century capturing rock-and-roll legends including the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin at work and in repose, has died. He was 74.

Marshall's death in New York City was confirmed Wednesday by Aaron Zych, a manager at the Morrison Hotel Galleries, which hosted one of the photographer's last exhibits.

Marshall had been scheduled to appear at a reception Wednesday night to promote his new book with celebrity photographer Timothy White. He apparently died in his sleep sometime overnight while alone in his New York hotel room, Zych said.

"Jim's work is legendary," he said. "As far as music photographers, he is the godfather."

The cause of death was not immediately known.

According to his professional Web site, Marshall had more than 500 album covers to his credit. The San Francisco resident was best-known for his iconic images from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, where he photographed Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar ablaze, and 1969's Woodstock, where as an official photographer he captured The Who tearing up the stage at sunrise.

Marshall also was the only photographer granted backstage access at what turned out to be the final Beatles concert, at San Francisco's Candlestick Park in 1966. Good timing and his rapport with musicians also helped him catch Johnny Cash memorably "flipping the bird" at a 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison.

Other famous subjects included Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and The Rolling Stones.

"This 'career' has never been just a job — it's been my life," Marshall remarked on his Web site.

Born in Chicago on Feb. 3, 1936, Marshall moved with his parents at age 2 to San Francisco's Fillmore District, then the heart of the city's jazz scene. He bought the first of his beloved Leica cameras in 1959, and a year later, during what he would describe as a "life-changing meeting" with saxophonist John Coltrane, he found his professional calling.

Before his lens discovered rock-and-roll, Marshall continued to find inspiration in jazz musicians, including Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. He also depicted poverty in rural Appalachia and the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi during the early 1960s.

Marshall spent two years living in New York, but returned to San Francisco in time to witness the birth of the 1960s counterculture and to meet young talent like Hendrix, Joplin and Jefferson Airplane during the city's Summer of Love.

His more recent subjects included Ben Harper and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Marshall's work has appeared in numerous books, including four featuring only his own photographs. "Match Point," his most recent, a collaboration with Timothy White, was published this month.

Phil Spector Gets His Teeth Knocked Out In Jail

Phil Spector has apparently had his teeth knocked out in a jail fight.

The convicted murderer allegedly lost some of his teeth after being involved in a brawl.

The legendary music producer - who was jailed last June for 19 years for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson - has reportedly been in a number of fights since he got to jail, and had some of his teeth knocked out in one brawl.

Spector's friend Steven Escobar, said: "Phil has quite a mouth on him. Not everyone understands his humour. He said the wrong thing to the wrong inmate in the yard.

"He mouthed off to a big guy, who punched him. At first, Phil said he fell down a flight of stairs. Later, he told family and friends what really happened."

Escobar said the star had suffered a bruised nose, a black eye and two missing teeth in the violent beating.

His account has, however, been denied by Spector's wife, 29-year-old Rachelle, who claims her husband - who invented the 'Wall Of Sound' production technique - is well liked among the population at the Corcoran prison in California.

She said: "Phil was not assaulted. Absolutely not. Anyone who meets Phil loves him. He's so freaking funny. He's an idol to the other inmates. They look out for him."

She also added that Spector had treatment for "an abscess and issues with crowns and implants" at a dentist in December.

A spokesperson for the prison said they had no record of Spector being involved in any reported altercations.

Earlier this month Spector, 70, launched an appeal against his murder conviction, claiming he was denied the right to a fair trial.

Steve Miller records two albums after 17-year break

By Gary Graff
DETROIT (Billboard) – Steve Miller hasn't released a new studio album in 17 years, but he plans to make up for lost time with a pair of blues and R&B cover sets that will come out this year and next.

"Bingo!," Miller's first Steve Miller Band release on his own Space Cowboy Records label, comes out June 15 and features songs by the likes of B.B. King ("Rock Me Baby") and Lowell Fulson ("Tramp"), Jimmy Reed ("You Got Me Dizzy") as well as three Jimmie Vaughan compositions. Miller plans to put a companion album out in the spring of 2011.

"This is a party record, man," Miller tells Billboard.com. "It's about getting up and getting ready to dance. It's like the fraternity party gigs I used to play in college. I went through and picked all my favorite tunes that I really, really loved. I wanted to make this record forever; it started off as just kind of a goof, and then it got real serious."

The sessions for "Bingo!" and its successor started in 2008 with co-producer Andy Johns at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in northern California. The two were working on Miller's last concert DVD, "Live FromChicago," and he recalls that "Andy said, 'Boy, I would really love to do a guitar album with you,' and I said, 'Y'know, I'm getting ready to do one.' The next thing you know...we go into Skywalker and cut 42 tracks."

Besides his regular band, including the late harmonica player Norton Buffalo, Miller -- who's been playing many of these songs on the road during the past few years -- was also joined by Joe Satriani on "Rock Me Baby" and Vaughan's "Sweet Soul Vibe," as well as by Santana percussionists Michael Carabello and Jose Areas.

Among the songs slated for the next album are Reed's "Close Together," Junior Wells' "Snatch It Back and Hold It," Roscoe Gordon's "No More Doggin'," Muddy Waters' "I Can't Be Satisfied," Robert Johnson's "Sweet Home Chicago" and Jimmy McCracklin's "The Walk."

"It's a great group of songs, and it gives us a lot of new material to play," Miller notes. "I'm excited about releasing some new music for the audience and for my band and for me to play. This material we're just releasing now we've been working on stage for the last couple of years and it's been going over really, really well and it's just worked out that now seemed like a good time to release a record."

Miller and company will be on the road in North America starting May 21 in Henderson, Nevada, with a new stage set by Broadway designer Rob Roth. He also plans to play Europe during the fall. Meanwhile, Miller says he has "10 or 11 pieces of music" for original songs that he has yet to write lyrics for, and he's also working with some youth musicians from San Francisco and Texas.

Julien Temple Creates New Jimi Hendrix Video

Director Julien Temple has made a video for the Jimi Hendrix track `Bleeding Heart`.

'Bleeding Heart’ is Hendrix’s blazing cover of the classic blues song by Elmore James. Originally recorded in April 1969, this studio recording featuring Jimi, Billy Cox and drummer Rocky Isaac, has never been released – until now. John McDermott (Producer of 'Valleys of Neptune’) comments on the track after the bands studio session, 'Bleeding Heart’ 'is confidently sung by Hendrix and punctuated by his inspired lead guitar work. 'Let’s listen to that!' laughed Hendrix after the take concluded’.

Additionally, the iconic film director Julien Temple has made the video to accompany this single. Temple is noted for his work with talents such as The Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Kinks, Neil Young, Tom Petty and Janet Jackson, as well as his work on feature films including 'The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle’, 'The Rolling Stones Live at The Max’ and 'The Filth & The Fury’.

This release is in conjunction with the newly curated 'Valleys of Neptune’ featuring twelve stunning studio recordings. The album provides an essential, compelling, and largely unseen view of what Jimi Hendrix was up to musically in the critical period between the release of Electric Ladyland in October 1968 and the 1970 opening of his own Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village.

Stay up to date at NeilYoung.com.

• Young’s last entirely solo acoustic tour was in 1999.
• In 1992, when asked to describe his influences, Young stated, “Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi Hendrix.”

NO MORE STAGE DIVING FOR IGGY POP
Iggy Pop is retiring from stage diving. The decision came after the rocker performed at Carnegie Hall last month. At that gig, when he leapt from the stage, rather than catching him and passing him around, the crowd parted and let Iggy slam into the ground. The 62-year-old Pop told the World Entertainment News Network, “When I landed, it hurt and I made a mental note that Carnegie Hall would be a good place for my last stage dive. The audience were just like, ‘What are you doing?’” Iggy and The Stooges’ next live show is on April 9th in Quimper, France.

KIRKE TALKS FREE DVD, NEW MUSIC FROM BAD COMPANY
Today, a new two-disc DVD set featuring the archival video footage, interviews, audio and memorabilia from the band Free is coming out. It’s called Free Forever, but when someone tells you to pick up the new Free DVD, don’t think that you won’t be charged for it. Drummer Simon Kirke told us it’s something the band has grappled with for years.

(Cut #1) “Well we had that trouble when we first started the band years ago, promoters hated it, hated having… because people thought it was free, it was a free concert. So it was something we fought for a long time.”

Meanwhile, after a handful of hugely successful reunion shows in the U-S last year, Kirke is gearing up to hit the road overseas with his other group with Paul Rodgers, Bad Company. So is there any chance the band might create some new music? Simon filled us in.

(Cut #2) “The chemistry is still there. I have a bunch of songs, I know Paul has a bunch of songs and I know Mick [Ralphs] has a bunch of songs. And we can either let them gather dust or we can get together and we can record them. I think there is certainly another album in us, absolutely. It’s really up to the others because really, if we make a new album, then we gotta go on the road and promote it and then you start that whole ball rolling again and I for one would love to. I mean, all my kids are grown now and I’d even bring my wife on the road.”

Bad Company’s U-K tour kicks off on April 1st. The Joe Perry Project will open for them and you can learn all about it at BadCompany.com.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD TO TOUR WITH BRET MICHAELS
Lynyrd Skynyrd is hitting the road with Bret Michaels. The Kings of Southern Rock will tour with the King of Reality TV starting in West Palm Beach, Florida on June 10th and cross the country for a month, playing 17 shows. The musicians have all been friends for years and in a statement, Bret calls Skynyrd one of his “all time favorite rock and roll bands.” Expect them to play fan favorites and Bret will even break out some of his new solo hits. Get all the dates at LynyrdSkynyrd.com.

• 38 Special will open most dates.

SPRINGSTEEN TAKING PART IN RECORD STORE DAY

SAMMY HAGAR WOULD CONSIDER REUNITING WITH VAN HALEN
Sammy Hagar has revealed that he would be up for reuniting with Van Halen, but some things would have to change first. The Chickenfoot singer told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that the last Van Halen record came out in 1993, adding, “That’s crazy… if it changed and was like it used to be when I was in the band, I could do a reunion and an album, but not under these circumstances.” Perhaps the circumstances he is referring to is the not-so-nice way he feels the group got rid of bassist Michael Anthony, who is now in Chickenfoot with Sammy. Read more at SGVTribune.com.

• Hagar was in Van Halen from 1985 to 1995, then again from 2003 to 2005.

SOUL MEN STEVE CROPPER (BOOKER T. & THE MGs) AND FELIX CAVALIERE (THE RASCALS) REUNITE FOR SECOND STAX RECORDING

‘Midnight Flyer,’ due in stores June 15, showcases more brilliant songwriting by two titans of blue-eyed soul’s golden age

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Steve Cropper, guitarist for Booker T. and the MGs and one of the primary architects of the unmistakable Stax sound of the 1960s, and vocalist/keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, the voice of the Rascals and the pivotal figure in the blue-eyed soul movement of that same era, have reconvened for their second collaborative recording. Sparks fly at the crossroads of Memphis soul and East Coast R&B when Stax Records releases Midnight Flyer on June 15, 2010.

Midnight Flyer, recorded in Nashville and mixed by the legendary David Z, is the followup to Nudge It Up a Notch, the 2008 maiden voyage by Cropper and Cavaliere that scored critical acclaim from the music and mainstream press. The San Francisco Chronicle called Nudge It Up a Notch “an unexpected delight,” while Blues Wax heralded the project as “one of the great surprises of 2008, and further evidence of Concord’s genuine commitment to the revamped Stax imprint.”

The Stax legacy — and Concord’s commitment to it — are very much alive in Midnight Flyer, an album that once again showcases the songwriting prowess of two towering figures from one of the most seminal periods in the history of American pop music. Assisting with the songwriting throughout most of the album’s 12 tracks is drummer/percussionist/vocalist Tom Hambridge, who also lent a hand with the crafting of the previous album.

“Felix and I come from pretty much the same musical school — but from different geographical locations,” says Cropper. “He’s a Jersey boy at heart, and I grew up in Memphis, but when soul meets soul, what can you say? There are no borders. There are no boundaries.”

But geography does play a role in the making of great songs, says Cavaliere. “Steve has that Southern vernacular, which is something I really like,” he says. “It’s almost like another language to those of us from the East Coast. It has a certain folky quality to it. Some of those idioms are part of the hit songs that Steve has written and recorded over the years, and they’re part of this record as well.”

The impact of both of these musicians and songwriters on pop music is nearly impossible to quantify. As part of Booker T. & the MGs — the house band for the Stax label in its original incarnation during the 1960s — Cropper co-wrote and produced classics by artists like Eddie Floyd (“Knock On Wood”), Wilson Pickett (“In the Midnight Hour”) and Otis Redding (“Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay”). In subsequent decades, he lent his instrumental and production skills to a range of artists including Jeff Beck, the Blues Brothers, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and many others.

Cavaliere came to prominence in the mid-’60s as vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter for the Rascals (initially known as the Young Rascals). Cavaliere wrote and/or sang several of the band’s biggest hits, including “Good Lovin’” (1966), “Groovin’” (1967), “It’s a Beautiful Morning” (1968) and “People Got To Be Free” (1968). The phrase “blue-eyed soul” was coined during the Rascals’ heyday, due in large part to the group’s highly successful forays into R&B and soul — styles that had been developed and previously dominated by African-American artists.

Co-produced by Cropper, Cavaliere and Hambridge, Midnight Flyer captures the synergy and brilliance that can only emerge when two powerful forces of nature come together. The result is a range of styles and shades, from heartfelt ballads like “When You’re With Me” to the soul-charged “I Can’t Stand It,” a churning vocal duet featuring Cavaliere and his daughter Aria. “Sexy Lady” harkens back to the soul stylings of the ’70s, while the funky instrumental “Do It Like This” digs into a tight groove and makes plenty of room for Cropper’s tasty riff work to close out the set.

“The main thing we both take away from this record is how much fun we had making it,” says Cavaliere. “We may have used a lot of new technology that didn’t even exist when Steve and I were recording back in the day, but the songs themselves are still the most important part of the process, and we just had a blast writing and recording them. I think that spirit comes through on the record.”

Cropper notes a timelessness about Cavaliere that serves as a metaphor for the music itself. “Felix is ageless,” he says. “Sure, you can look at him and see that he’s gotten older since those early days, just like we all have. But if you close your eyes, he sounds as young and energetic as he did when he was making records back in the ’60s . . . Working together on records like this reminds us of the kinds of things that go into the making of a good song. We’re still doing that, and we’re still having fun doing it.”

Dusty Springfield, Herman's Hermits among 'British Invasion' DVDs due next week

March 22, 4:23 PMManhattan Local Music Examiner Jim Bessman

"British Invasion" box set
Copyright ©2010 Reelin' In The Years Productions

A new DVD release highlighting British Invasion acts Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Herman's Hermits takes Reelin' In The Years Productions in a new direction.
The San Diego-based company, which boasts the largest music footage library in the world, has been Grammy-nominated for it’s American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966 DVD set.
Reelin' In The Years has also earned acclaim for its extensive Jazz Icons series featuring the likes of John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Dave Brubeck; Blues Legends titles spotlighting Sonny Boy Williamson, Freddie King, Albert King and Memphis Slim; Motown performances by artists including Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Temptations and Marvin Gaye; and other concert offerings focusing on Pete Seeger, Otis Redding, Ike & Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix.
"We always focus on the artist and the art," says Reelin' In The Years president David Peck. "I guarantee you that the biggest complaint regarding music documentaries is that the fans want the full performances--not some lame talking head pontificating on the greatness of the artist followed by 30 seconds of a song, as opposed to the artist who's making the music and the whole song.
"So we decide what we want to use and interview the artist about what the song means and the inspiration and the recording process and the story of the band--but all that is interwoven between full performances. It's a different type of documentary, for people who don't have short attention spans!"
The new British Invasion series was conceived to bring greater recognition to underappreciated artists from the mid-1960s, as indicated by the titles: Dusty Springfield--Once Upon A Time 1964-1969, Small Faces--All Or Nothing 1965-1968, Herman's Hermits--Listen People 1964-1969 and Gerry & The Pacemakers--It's Gonna Be All Right 1963-1965.
"When you think 'British Invasion,' the first group, obviously, is The Beatles--and deservedly so," says Peck. "Then you think of the Rolling Stones, who came a year later, and maybe The Who--who weren't part of the first wave. But we all know about those bands. So our idea was to go with artist's who hadn't gotten the respect they truly deserve."
He says that Herman's Hermits, for instance, "outsold the Beatles and the Stones for a short time and were a huge, huge band [overlooked] by snobby rock critics." The late Springfield he adds, "isn't here to tell her story, so we got archival interviews and new ones with Burt Bacharach, and Madeline Bell--who sang backup for her--and discovered that she actually produced a lot of her records, but didn't get credit because she was a woman. But when you watch these programs you realize that the British Invasion was a big story--not just one band, even if The Beatles were its rock-solid foundation."
Already available in England, the British Invasion titles come out March 30, individually or in a deluxe box set featuring a bonus fifth disc with over two and a-half hours of additional content. A release party is set for April 8 at the British Consulate-General in New York, hosted by Consul General Sir Alan Collins and with Small Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan and Herman's Hermits guitarist Keith Hopwood in attendance.
"The British Invasion wasn't just great songs but a cultural event," concludes Peck, who is now clearing a second British Invasion series starring artists of similar stature. "These artists changed America's perspective of England--and England's of America--and both for the better."

16mm HOME MOVIES OF COUNTRY STARS OF THE 1950S JUST DISCOVERED;

HANK WILLIAMS, CARTER FAMILY, LEFTY FRIZELL, OTHERS SEEN IN PERFORMANCE AND BACKSTAGE

San Diego, CA - Reelin' In The Years Productions, the world's largest music footage library has uncovered a 30-minute film of home movies from the 1950s featuring the legendary Hank Williams Sr. along with Marty Robbins, the Carter Family, Merle Travis, Lefty Frizell, Hank Snow, Maddox Bothers & Rose, Bill Monroe and a host of others.

These images, shot in pristine 16mm color film, capture these classic artists in performance and in rare candid moments. Highlights include Hank Williams singing at a disc jockey convention in Nashville, Marty Robbins playing guitar on a front lawn, Kitty Wells standing in front of her tour car and Merle Travis preparing to board a small plane.

This newly recovered footage was shot by John Banks, part owner of radio station KRDU in Dinuba, CA while these artists were at the station and his home. In addition to filming these artists in California, Banks took his 16mm camera to Nashville and captured many artists backstage during a convention of disc jockeys held in the early 1950s.

"There exists precious little footage of many of these artists shot so early in their careers,” notes David Peck, President of Reelin’ In The Years Productions. “To now have pristine color film documenting Hank Williams just a few short years before his untimely death, is thrilling. This is an important piece of country music history." The forgotten original 16mm color films had been in the garage of Banks’ widow Bernice until their recent discovery.

The film has now been restored and transferred directly to digital format, highlighting the richness of depth and color that 16mm film offered. Another recent discovery by Reelin’ In The Years is 50 minutes of home movies from the Louisiana Hayride in the late 50s and early 60s featuring color 8mm footage of Johnny Cash, George Jones, Ray Price, Faron Young and Hawkshaw Hawkins among others.

In addition to having the world largest library of music footage (over 10,000 hours), Reelin' In The Years has produced over 55 commercially released DVDs, garnering them a Grammy nomination, platinum and gold awards and rave reviews. Earlier this week, the company released a five volume British Invasion DVD box set chronicling the music and careers of Dusty Springfield, Herman’s Hermits, Small Faces and Gerry & The Pacemakers. A second series of British Invasion DVDs is expected in the fall of 2010.
