Amy Winehouse Laid To Rest

Amy Winehouse has been laid to rest at a private service for family and friends in London.

The 27-year old singer was farewelled in the last few hours by her family and friends like producer Mark Ronson and close pal Kelly Osbourne.

Amy’s former husband Blake Fielder-Civil was not granted leave from jail to attend to funeral. He is serving a 32 month sentence for burglary in prison.

An autopsy in the cause of death has so far been ruled inconclusive. Amy was buried under Jewish tradition within days of death but the autopsy results are not expected for at least one month.

The cause of death legally is currently listed as “inconclusive”.

TWENTY-SEVEN

Ok everybody, it's July 27 and what could be a more fitting tribute than to say goodbye to Amy Winehouse while we look back at all the other artists that left this world at the much too young age of twenty seven...Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson of Canned Heat, Pete Ham of Badfinger and blues legend Robert Johnson.

Dewey said, “I have never forgotten the good times we spent making that music and learning about life together… His contributions to the music of America have always been present and will last forever.” Dan, who sang and played guitar, appeared on the band’s hits like “A Horse with No Name” and “Ventura Highway.” Read more at VenturaHighway.com.

Jackie DeShannon's new album revisits classic hits

JACKIE DeSHANNON’S ‘WHEN YOU WALK IN THE ROOM’ REVISITS INFLUENTIAL SINGER-SONGWRITER’S HITS, DUE SEPTEMBER 27 ON ROCKBEAT RECORDS

Included are newly-recorded, timelessly produced versions of “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” “Bette Davis Eyes” and other originals, plus one song apiece by Jack Nitzche/Sonny Bono and Burt Bacharach/Hal David.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — “Think of your fellow man, lend him a helping hand, put a little love in your heart.” That was the opening mantra of Jackie DeShannon’s “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” which she penned with her brother Randy Myers and Jimmy Holiday. The 1969 single took the singer-songwriter to the pinnacle in popular music, selling more than a million copies. In the late 1980s, Annie Lennox and Al Green paired up on a hit remake but it was Jackie’s original recording that served as one of the anthems of a generation during the socially and politically turbulent Vietnam War era.

On When You Walk in the Room, the newly-recorded collection of revisited favorites from the DeShannon oeuvre scheduled for September 27, 2011 release on RockBeat Records (through eOne Entertainment), the gems are allowed to breathe through stripped-down productions, allowing their lyrics to resonate and touch your soul. Liner notes are by Huffington Post music writer Mike Ragogna.

The album contains such classics as “When You Walk in the Room,” “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” “Bette Davis Eyes,” “Come and Stay With Me,” and “Heart in Hand” — all of which are DeShannon originals or co-writes, plus Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono’s “Needles and Pins” and Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”

One listen to the relaxed tempo treatment of “Breakaway” or the soft-ballad rebirth of “When You Walk in the Room” and you’ll understand why Jackie DeShannon remains one of the most cherished artists of the singer-songwriter era and why she was inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Nothing but an acoustic guitar and bass are needed whenever a vocalist this expressive is involved. That approach — with splashes of strings and an electric guitar or two — is how Jackie tackles these recordings. This includes a new song, “Will You Stay in My Life,” a highly visual creation that reinforces the romanticism inherent in DeShannon’s repertoire.

The revisited Jackie DeShannon classics featured on this package are like mile markers on pop’s journey through the decades. “When You Walk in the Room,” with words and music by the singer, and “Needles and Pins” represent the early 1960s Jackie. Her long tenure with Liberty/Imperial Records was best expressed by her work with eclectic arranger-composer Nitzsche, a close friend and artistic collaborator. U.K. Mersey Beat band the Searchers hung their star over both sides of the pond with covers of the DeShannon tunes that would become rock standards. But on her versions, Jackie reads the lyrics with a wider range of emotions, revealing a deep, evolving artist.

As the ’60s evolved, DeShannon grew as a writer and recording artist. She had the good fortune to join the Beatles in 1964 as an opening act on their first U.S. tour, performed with blues guitarist Ry Cooder at the legendary Ash Grove, and wrote with fellow Metric Music Publishing song scribe Randy Newman. Folk-rock pioneers the Byrds featured Jackie’s original “Don’t Doubt Yourself Babe” on their debut album. In England, she composed and recorded with a pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page, and subsequently wrote one of British songbird Marianne Faithfull’s signature songs, “Come and Stay With Me.” Back home, Jackie was a frequent presence on hip television music shows such as Shindig! and sang with Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell and the Everly Brothers.

DeShannon achieved a top ten hit in 1965 with her exquisitely soulful rendition of Bacharach and David’s “What the World Needs Now Is Love.” The recording — which earned three Grammy nominations, including Best Female Vocal, Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Vocal and Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Single — became the definitive interpretation and was a recent induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Jackie firmly established herself with a song of her own, on her own terms, with “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” bringing her another Best Contemporary Female Vocal Grammy® nomination. She also came up with the bluesy “Bad Water,” which Ray Charles’ Raelettes issued in 1970. As that decade progressed, DeShannon wrote with Van Morrison and John Bettis, among others.

Her writing work with Donna Weiss took DeShannon into the ’80s: their “Bette Davis Eyes” broke Kim Carnes as a major artist of that decade. The song was one of the U.S.’s first “new wave” hits, and earned Jackie the 1982 Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

On When You Walk in the Room, DeShannon revisits these tunes in a timeless context. The songs themselves are the stars of the album.

Jackie DeShannon’s songs have been performed by a wide range of artists, including Van Morrison, Al Green, Annie Lennox, Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Parton, The Byrds, Marianne Faithfull, The Temptations, Cher, The Searchers, Brenda Lee, Rick Nelson, The Carpenters, Anne Murray, Delaney & Bonnie, Ella Fitzgerald, Steve Forbert, Pam Tillis, The Dave Clark Five, Tracey Ullman, Dean Martin, Mary Mary, Dionne Warwick, Bobby Vee, The Fleetwoods, Dobie Gray, Rita Coolidge, Duane Eddy and dozens more.

GENE SIMMONS PROPOSES?
Has Gene Simmons done the unthinkable and proposed? It looks that way! On last night’s episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels, the Kiss rocker got down on one knee in front of his longtime girlfriend, Shannon Tweed, on a beach in Belize. See a clip of it at AETV.com.
• TIDBIT: Gene and Shannon have been together for 28 years and have two kids together.

CHICKENFOOT FIND A TOURING DRUMMER?
As we previously reported, when Chickenfoot hit the road to promote their upcoming sophomore effort, Chickenfoot III, drummer Chad Smith won’t be able to join them because he’ll be busy with his other band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now, we might know his replacement. Guitarist Joe Satriani told PlanetRock.com that it will be studio musician Kenny Aronoff. Joe explained Kenny was Chad’s recommendation and he described him as an “amazing drummer” who has worked with John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Tony Iommi, Bob Seger, Elton John and many others. Read more at PlanetRock.com.
• TIDBIT: Chickenfoot III is due out on September 27th.

ALLMAN RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT HEPATITIS C
A year ago, Gregg Allman underwent a liver transplant after his own liver was damaged due to his Hepatitis C. Now, the rocker is starting a campaign to help raise awareness about the disease and to kick it off, he and The Allman Brothers Band will perform a benefit concert in New York tonight (7/27), the eve of World Hepatitis Day. Gregg told us about what happened when he first found out he had the disease and what we can do to prevent it.
(Cut #4) “I was diagnosed with it and then I waited. I waited so long it turned into cancer so I had to have a transplant and man, nobody wants to go through that. Doing nothing is not an option. It really isn’t. My advice would be go down to your doctor and get a blood test. That’s all it takes.”
Proceeds from tonight’s show will go towards organizations that provide education and support services to people with Hep C. Get tickets at LiveNation.com and learn more at TuneInToHepC.com.
• TIDBIT: The show takes place at the Beacon Theatre, where Gregg has played every year since 1991 except for in 2007, when the band has to cancel their show because Allman was ailing from the disease.
• TIDBIT: Nearly 3.2-million Americans have chronic Hepatitis C.

PAIN CAUSES PHIL COLLINS TO LEAVE AWARDS SHOW
Phil Collins said he no longer liked music, and now, there are reports that the famed Genesis rocker had to leave an awards show over the weekend. Phil was set to present Ringo Starr with an award at the U-K’s Mojos, but he had to leave the event after suffering pain from the same nerve damage that forced him to retire back in March. Before the awards show departure, he told England’s The Mirror, “I’m on my last legs. I couldn’t come back to music. All these aches and pains – I can’t do it anymore.”
• TIDBIT: Phil previously revealed the damage came from years of bad posture behind the drum kit that caused his spine to crush his spinal cord.

BIG NAMES ON BUDDY HOLLY TRIBUTE ALBUM
September 7th would have been Buddy Holly’s 75th birthday and to celebrate the rock pioneer, some big named musicians performed covers of the singer’s hits for a new collection. It’s called Listen To Me: Buddy Holly and features the likes of Ringo Starr, Stevie Nicks, Jackson Browne, Brian Wilson, Jeff Lynne and many others’ versions of some of Buddy’s greatest songs. It’s due out on September 6th.
• TIDBIT: Buddy passed away on February 3rd, 1959 at the age of 22 following a plane crash.
• TIDBIT: Last month, another tribute album called Rave On Buddy Holly came out, featuring covers by Paul McCartney, Lou Reed and others.

AMERICA’S LATEST ALBUM (see obit above)
Yesterday (7/26), America released a new album filled with their versions of some amazing songs. The set is called Back Pages and includes covers of tracks by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Simon & Garfunkel, The Zombies and many others. While they don’t have any original songs on the album, singer Gerry Beckley told us how they make sure their records are filled with great tracks.
(Cut #1) “I really come from the ‘you have to write 20 to get two or three,’ I think. They’re not all going to be gems. And this is why. Coming up with an album, when people say the great albums of all time and you think of what are those in your life, for everybody it’s different. That’s what it has to be, it has to be a collection of very good songs, and that’s not easy.”
Hear America’s interpretations of some very good songs by grabbing a copy of Back Pages tomorrow.
• TIDBIT: America are touring throughout the summer and you can get all their dates at VenturaHighway.com.

SPRINGSTEEN WOULD WIN AN ELECTION
If the race for Governor of New Jersey were between Jersey native Bruce Springsteen and New Jersey’s Republican governor Chris Christie, who would you vote for? A recent poll asked that question and the results show that Springsteen would win the election. While The Boss has opposed Christie in the past, including writing a letter to the Asbury Park Press attacking the governor’s state budget cuts, it doesn’t seem as though Bruce will ever run for office. Read more at RollingStone.com.
• TIDBIT: Chris Christie is said to be a rising star for the GOP but his approval rating in New Jersey has dropped ten points since the beginning of the year and is now at 43 percent.

U2’S 360 TOUR ALMOST OVER
In just a few days, U2 will say goodbye to their 360º Tour. The trek is the highest grossing tour of all time, but according to guitarist The Edge, for them, it’s still all about the music (See Related Cut #2). U2 roll into Heinz Field in Pittsburgh tomorrow (7/26).
• TIDBIT: U2 have sold 150-million albums worldwide.

HEAR CLAPTON AND MARSALIS PLAY THE BLUES
Back in April, Eric Clapton and Wynton Marsalis got together to play the blues in front of a pair of sold-out crowds at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. Now, those two performances are coming to CD and DVD. The set is aptly called Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton Play the Blues and includes guest spots from Taj Mahal and a version of Clapton’s hit, “Layla.” Pick it up on September 13th.
• TIDBIT: Marsalis is the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
• TIDBIT: Together, Wynton and Eric have won 28 GRAMMY Awards.

PAUL McCARTNEY TO REPORTEDLY WED IN LONDON
More alleged details are coming out about Paul McCartney’s upcoming wedding to Nancy Shevell. According to PerezHilton.com, the couple plans to tie the knot in London in a small ceremony with only close members of Paul’s family. They’ll then reportedly fly to New York and hold a party for their friends and Nancy’s family. McCartney apparently wants to avoid a big wedding, like his last one in 2002 to Heather Mills, which included three-hundred guests, fireworks and thousands of dollars worth of flowers.
• TIDBIT: Among the guests at Paul’s last wedding was his Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr.

BEATLES MEMORABILIA SELLS FOR BIG BUCKS
If you’ve got Beatles memorabilia, you could be sitting on a treasure. This week, unseen photos of the Fab Four’s first U-S show sold at auction for more than 360-thousand dollars. According to the Belfast Telegraph, 50 silver gelatin prints from the band’s February 11th, 1964 gig at the Washington Coliseum were sold individually through Christie’s. Meanwhile, a John Lennon-signed insert poster from his Double Fantasy album sold for 40-thousand dollars, shattering the previous record for a John Lennon autograph.
• TIDBIT: The photos were estimated to sell for just 100-thousand dollars.
• TIDBIT: A shot of the band taken from behind them sold for over 68-thousand dollars while a backlit one of Ringo Starr as he drummed and sang on “I Wanna Be Your Man” went for over eight-grand.

A BOOK OF ILLUSTRATIONS OF ELVIS
Next year marks the 35th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death and to mark the occasion, a group of comic book artists will release a lavish, limited-edition collection of illustrations of The King. It’s called Graphic Elvis and a press release describes it as “an illustrated homage to Elvis’ lifelong appreciation of comic books.” It will also feature hand-written notes and musings from Elvis rarely seen by the public. The book will sell for 195 bucks and is available for pre-order now for a December 10th release date. Get it at GraphicElvis.MyShopify.com.
• TIDBIT: Elvis once said, “When I was a child, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. So every dream that I’ve dreamed has come true a hundred times.”

THOMAS DOLBY PREPARES FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN 20 YEARS,
‘A MAP OF THE FLOATING CITY,’ AVAILABLE OCTOBER 25

Release follows conclusion of groundbreaking transmedia game

Guests include guest artists Mark Knopfler, Regina Spektor, Natalie MacMaster, Bruce Woolley and Imogen Heap

LONDON, U.K. — Thomas Dolby, the iconic ’80s star whose smash hits “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive” helped define the MTV generation/revolution, will break his 20-year silence with a new release later this year titled A Map of the Floating City. The album, featuring appearances by special guest artists Mark Knopfler, Regina Spektor, Natalie MacMaster, Bruce Woolley and Imogen Heap, will be available on October 25, 2011 on Lost Toy People Records as a regular and hi-res download, as a physical CD, and in a special Deluxe Edition featuring a second disc of instrumentals and bonus tracks.

The five-time Grammy®-nominated British artist quit the music business in the early ’90s and spent many years in Silicon Valley, where his tech company Beatnik Inc. created the ringtone synthesizer embedded in more than three billion mobile phones shipped by Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and others. Now retired from Beatnik, Dolby has returned to his native U.K. and is busy recording an album of brand new songs in a renewable energy-powered studio he built aboard a 1930s lifeboat in the garden of his beach house on England’s North Sea coast.

Of the album, which is divided into three parts, Dolby says, “The new songs are organic and very personal. A Map of the Floating City is a travelogue across three imaginary continents: In Amerikana I’m reflecting with affection on the years I spent living in the U.S.A., and my fascination with its roots music. Urbanoia is a dark place, a little unsettling . . . I’m not a city person. And in Oceanea I return to my natural home on the windswept coastline.”

“I marvel at the new landscape of the music business — distribution via the Internet and recording technologies I barely dreamed of when I started out,” he continues. “But this album does not sound electronic at all. I have zero desire to add to the myriad of machine-based, synth-driven grooves out there. The Net has made a music career approachable for thousands of bands — but I hear too few single-minded voices among them, so I’m returning to what I do best, which is write songs, tell stories.”

To help tell his stories, Dolby has enlisted an impressive cast of guest musicians. Legendary guitarist Mark Knopfler helps drive the epic “17 Hills,” a song about a pair of hapless lovers and a jailbreak. Natalie MacMaster, the Cape Breton fiddler, adds spice to two songs. Scottish singer Eddi Reader takes a front seat on the ethereal “Oceanea.” Bruce Woolley (Camera Club) plays theremin. And Regina Spektor has a cameo as an East European waitress on “Evil Twin Brother.”

The innovative transmedia game The Floating City <http://www.floatingcity.com <http://www.floatingcity.com> >, co-created by Dolby and based on his song catalog all the way back to the 1980s, is currently in full swing and is proving highly addictive for thousands of regular players. The winning “tribe” will be treated to a private concert performance of the new album in its entirety. Thomas Dolby will shortly announce a string of concert dates in the U.S. and U.K. in support of the album.
